About the Author
Linda Byler grew up Amish and is an active member of the Amish church today. She is the author of four bestselling fiction series, all set in the Amish world: Hester's Hunt for Home, Lancaster Burning, Sadie’s Montana, and Lizzie Searches for Love. In addition, Byler has written four Christmas romances: The Little Amish Matchmaker, The Christmas Visitor, Mary’s Christmas Good-Bye, and Becky Meets Her Match. This was a good story although I was surprised at a rebellious Amish daughter. Hannah is impossible. If her parents say white, she'll say black. If they say rain, she'll say sun. She refuses to work at what she doesn't like and openly talks back to her father which while it is wrong I can understand. Her father lost his farm in Lancaster during the Depression and moved the family to North Dakota. He refuses the advice of his neighbors and plants corn which dies. His wife is a milquetoast who just submits any will of her own to him. He says God will provide and does little to improve his own situation. God does provide but I was taught that God helps those who help themselves and this father would rather his family starve than take advice or help from others.
Mose Detweiler moved his family out west to escape the shame he had brought on the family. Hannah was very resistant to the idea but once there she soon became the breadwinner for the family. Circumstances arose that allowed Sarah and her children to return to the Amish community they had lived in. Once there Hannah was determined to return to the Dakotas to prove they were entitled to the claim.
I love the wedt and i love reading about the Amish. So put the both together and you have a winning combination! Linda is an exceptional writer . I have read many many of her books. Love you Linda!
The book was somewhat depressing reflecting the nature of the period. Hannah's persistent belligerence made her an unlikeable protagonist. The book ends with nothing resolved so be prepared to purchase the next book if you need an "ending".
Very good. And being from ND, i could identify with much of the book. Really enjoyable read. Will read others in this series
The story is much deeper than most Amish fiction. The characters struggle and grow. The plot holds you and makes you think.
Good author to write about the Amish people as the branched to other states and how they had to learn the hardships.
An interesting story of Life on the wild prairie. The conflict between mother and daughter...the challenge of living your religion or not...
