Samuel Thayer is an internationally recognized authority on edible wild plants who has authored two award-winning books on the topic, Nature’s Garden and The Forager’s Harvest. Samuel Thayer is quite possibly the most knowledgeable foraging author there is. Highly recommend this book as well as his other two. In this volume he takes on some interesting plants not much found in other foraging books, and as always, he is superbly thorough as well as enjoyable to read. The introductory chapters are not the usual blather and you will want to read them. I especially enjoyed the section on The Chicken Feathers Man, about how some people kill the joy in foraging and other pursuits. I have known and been that person on occasion, and Thayer’s portrait helps me laugh at myself and get over it.I wish that these books were available on Kindle, so that I could conveniently carry all three on hiking/foraging vacations. That is absolutely my only criticism: that I can’t buy them again in a new format.
I can't recommend Thayer's books enough. He gives incredible detail, focuses on all aspects of the plant, has photos of what the plant looks like in its edible phase (incredibly rare trait for wild plant books!) and all of his information comes from years of experience actually eating the plants he writes about. This is plant information you can trust. I hope he keeps writing about more plants!
Wild edible books can be useless rehash of older books and fail to provide the needed info to actually enjoy eating the foraged food. That's where Thayer really shines in my opinion. He provides the needed preparation info in an honest fashion with his experience. For example, in one of his books he covers garlic mustard and reveals that one of the most palatable part is the inner stalk before seed pods develop.Thayer covers fewer plants in his books (I own 3), but does it well in each. If he writes another I'll buy it too.
Lots of great info. The best part is the very end where he explains IN DETAIL how to identify and discern between wild parsnip, water hemlock, western hemlock, etc. Lots of detail on each plant. Love it.
Sam does a wonderful job with this and all his books. Fantastic content, well thought out and great photos. An absolute must for any forager.
An instant classic! Thayer's three volumes are absolutely indispensable for foragers of any experience level. You won't find more informative, comprehensive, and entertaining information on edible wild plants anywhere else!
