I am a voracious reader. I am ALWAYS reading a book on basketball or studying a video and I have to say, this is one of the best books I've read. I am a NORMAL High School basketball coach at a very normal school in the Charlotte, NC area. Most of the books and videos I read or watch are by guys who are at an ELITE level: Duke, West Virginia, DeMatha, etc. I often wonder how to translate D1 thinking to the level of a normal HS basketball team.This book was the answer.This book was written by guys on either end of the spectrum. On the one hand you have legendary Randy Montgomery with 500+ wins and on the other hand you have the guy who represents most of "us"...Matt Kramer with 100 wins. Hearing about how to build a program from both of these guys was just incredible. Randy represented the ideal while Matt spoke directly to my reality! I took a ton of GREAT ideas from this book, and probably most of all...I came away inspired.Whether you achieve 500 wins or 100 wins...you can make a HUGE impact on the lives of the next generation and you can build something that will LAST. I give this book 5 stars and can't recommend it highly enough. Oh, and one more thing, Matt is so accessible. I've emailed him several times during the season and he never fails to respond.If you are a "normal" coach like me...this is a must read. Also, get in touch with Matt...you won't regret it.
I'm currently in my fifth year of coaching. I have countless books on strategies and X's and O's. But the greatest book I have are the ones not talking about strategies but coaching in general. I've read books from NBA coaches and college coaches. But this book is the most easy to relate with. This is a High School Coaching Book. It reminds me of the book From Good to Great.Great insight from two coaches at different ends of the coaching ladder. One coach has 500 wins and made a program great while the other coach has 100 wins and completely rebuilt two programs. What works for these coaches will not work for everyone, there is no direct blueprint for a winning program. Everyone wants to win, but this book puts into perspective a couple things. The relationships players and parents build with coaches last a lifetime. It's really hard to just run a great program without adversity, at some point adversity is going to hit even the most prepared at the time coach. Coaches must be professional and strong through tough times.
I have known & coached against Coach Montgomery years ago...we got whupped!!! I recently called him to get some insight into his Little Dribblers Program, this has been a staple of his super successful program. He suggested that I buy this book & call him if I needed any more insight. What an amazing book!!! I only wish I would have had this book 25 years ago when I began coaching & prior to my first head coaching tenure. The insight that he & Coach Kramer offer is well worth the cost & even more valuable in dealing with several experiences I have encountered in my tenures as a head coach; Interviewing, Job Security, Fund Raising, Being Forced Out by new Administrators,Dealing w/ Parents, and much more. This book should be required reading for any young coach who thinks they want to become a head coach.
Great book I bought for my dad as we know Randy who co-wrote the book. Good read for all coaches out there.
This book was an ok read. It was solid advice to coaching basketball. If you have been around the game, most of it you know from the people around you in the profession you talk with. The book has solid advice but nothing really new or groundbreaking. This would be a good read for a starting coach especially if they don't have many mentors.
Without a doubt, a thorough read that spurs countless internal discussions about the best way to manage a high school or community basketball program. Having the perspective of two coaches vs. only a single author lends depth to the material and both of their insights. No matter where a coach currently resides on their career path, there are gems of wisdom in this book which will prove extremely helpful!
A great guide for any and all high school basketball coaches.
It has proven a helpful read if you are jumping into head coaching for the first time, like I was. A littletoo many details from coach Kramer if you ask me, but his warnings especially about the pitfalls that can trip you up are good cautionary tales.Both coaches have good advice on the multi faceted issues facing a head coaching.
