Wow! I was just taken on a complete emotional rollercoaster. Talking about a greatly woven tale! This book was so good. I wanted to kick Rhonda's entire azz. I was so drawn into this story until I was air boxing and cursing out loud. My husband was asking whether the story was a true one because of my reactions. But the truth of the matter is it could have been! we encounter some of these misguided youth everyday and their endings are pretty much the same! I would recommend that every teenage boy and girl read this book and find out the truth! This story will save some young girl from thinking that the only thing she has going for her is her body and some young man to realize the street may feed you for a minute, but it will also cage and kill you! The lesson here is necessary if we are ever to change what is happening to our youth in our communities! Great damn job of highlighting these lifestyles and showing them raw and uncut! This was an Outstanding piece of work!
After reading my first K'wan tale, "Wild Cherry", I quickly jumped into this book and without a doubt, I'm glad I did. The book opened up grabbing my attention and it held it till the "Acknowledgements" lmao. There were so many characters in the books and so many tales that you easily get wrapped into all of the craziness and you wonder how the book is gonna turn out. Jah...I love him. Him, Billy, and Yoshi were my three fave characters of all, while Rhonda, Larry, and Rel were the worst. If the rest of the series gets better than this then I'ma be a die hard fan before I know it. Can't wait to jump into "Still Hood". I highly recommend this novel.
This book started off really slow for me. I felt that the author spent to much time introducing the characters which made me get that dragging feeling that I didn't want to continue reading, but BOY am I glad I continued. This author has a great imagination. There were so many characters like Rhonda who needed to be put in a book, because believe it or not there are so many women just like her. Rhonda would do just about anything for a dollar. She didn't think anyone else but her self deserved to be happy such as her son father Paul Rhonda made sure she made his life and relationship with his girlfriend hell. There are a lot more characters with different storylines that connect all together.
This story was written kind of different then a lot of books but what I liked most about it was how Kwan would tell the story of multiple characters while eventually they ask pretty much led to each other This is a talent in itself...it does show how small the world can be but also what I loved was how in the end he described how we as a people can be so easily distracted from dreams and ambitions and he never did condone this in the book but it's reality still stood firm...this book is a definite must read if ur from the hood I definitely give thousands of thumbs up great job
I just finished this knock out novel by K'wan "Hood Rat". The book was pure FIRE!!! K'wan did his thing, I mean he stuck his foot all up in it.Travel within the pages of this book and you will meet an assortment of interesting characters. Let's start with Rhonda, a twenty something mother of 3 who gives new meaning to the word trifling, she's a welfare queen and proud of it. She doesn't give a sh-- about her kids only getting drunk, high, sleeping around and making life a living hell for her baby daddy Paul, and girlfriend Marlene.Then there is Yoshi a stripper/money getter, and her best friend Billy a tomboyish beauty with a broken heart, who is not sure if she likes men, or something else. The 4th member of the crew is Reese who lives at home with mom and is basically Rhonda's sidekick, she sleeps around and has no ambitions or goals, just like Rhonda.There is also Jah, a true gangsta who is Paul's liitle brother. Spooky his ace boon coon from the womb to the tomb. Crazy Eight the neighborhood mentally challenged pest, up and coming rappers Bad Blood who are Pain, True,Lex and Jay. Bad blood was discovered by Don B., a star in his own right. Marcus, and Cat, who work at the Shooter's Club, a brother and sister that both have their eyes on Billy. Also there are Slick and his crew Rel and Groovy, plus Paul's best freind Larry Love.All of there paths will cross in a truly crazy and violent turn of events during the summer of 2006.I agree with one of the other reviewers, my fave character was Jah too, you really start to root for him although he is busting caps all over Harlem, he's got a good heart and a soft spot for a special lady. I was saddened by the way Paul's life turned out.DRAMA is all up in the pages of "Hood Rat"!!This book is a must read, it is so good I was sad to see it end. I look forward to K'wan's next work!!
Hood Rat is the story of 4 friends and their adventures in the hood. It took me a long time to pick up this book, and I am mad that I waited to long. Billy, Reese, Rhonda and Yoshi have a never ending supply of drama and it will keep you wanting to read more. There are a lot of characters in this book, and it was a little confusing at first, but as you read everything seems to fall into place. Their were some serious topics touched upon in this book, and the ending had me a little teary eyed! I am glad I had the next book of the series on hand to read!
I loved how each of the characters were broke down and explained. I couldn't put the book down and the ending blew me away looking foward to read more of K'wans books!.
First let me say if you are looking for dirty, hard to the streets, back stapping and love gained well this is the book for you. So much drama in this book it will leave wanting more and more. As I turned the pages I could not put it down. Four so called friends each got theirs in the end. I am very happy that Kwan wrote with such vivid imagination and provided such precision with each character he brought to life in pages. It just goes to show always watch yourself and that one next to you . you might get played.. If you havent read it go get it now. Kwan thank you for yet another good read. Ive read others books from you Gangsta, Road Dawgs and Blow you are on it my man keep doing it .
