I am teaching a writing class on family histories and my students and I are excited about the possibility of using information from this well-written book to insert imaginative additions to our writing by using the timelines in the book. For example, the book list timelines for diseases, immigrant trails, and wars among many timelines. One can then insert information on the death of a small child when cholera took many lives during a certain period of history. Very useful and many options from which to choose.
Excellent quick reference book. This is a great book which provides access to the dates with a summary of key historical events around the world. There are also narrative sections, but I find the book to be most helpful due to the immediate access to time-frames..
Wow, lots of knowledge in this book. Will take a long time to read and comprehend all! It contains a wealth of information. This author did a lot of research to write this book. Would recommend to anyone searching their family tree. It fills in a lot of unanswered questions such as why a lot of people in your family all died in the same year. Was it due to war or perhaps a disease?
I have only started to read through this but am impressed with the wealth of historical information. I'm certain it will be very helpful beginning to understand what was going on in the times of my ancestors.

Genealogy makes the you look at history from a different angle. Timelines were just something to memorize to pass the New York State History Regents exams - this book goes way beyond those lists to memorize -- it helps to understand and place ancestors in history. I use it to double check some of my research. I use it often when I find someone new to add to my tree to see if something happened during their life that might lead to another bit of source of documentation. I took my last history class at university 30+ years ago -- I remember the concepts -- the fine details not so much this book helps. I whole heartedly recommend this book to all who seek their ancestors or who have found them and want to palace them in an historical context.
Great help to know what was happening in your ancestors lives. Helps to figure out why they moved, why so many died so close together, etc.
