Literary Wonderlands is a compilation of fictional worlds from literary works that date back as far as 4,000 years ago and extend to modern times. It's organized chronologically and is divided into five eras starting with "ancient myth & legend" and ending with "the computer age." I expected a superficial glimpse into well known fictional worlds, but this written commentary isn't formulaic and is instead a heavily researched and analytic look at an eclectic selection of literary works analyzed by a team of different writers. The works are addressed in varied ways within this book, but it generally delves into the personal lives and motivations of the authors, the social context or background when the work was written, the impact of the work, the fictional world and its meaning and characteristics, the story line or plot and more. For each work, the author is pictured (unless anonymous) and illustrations or photos are provided to convey a sense of the fictional world (with many being stills from hit movies based on the literary works). The earliest work discussed in Literary Wonderlands is an anonymous poem from c.1750 BCE (The Epic of Gilgamesh), and this book takes us all the way through to 2015 (Two Years Eight Months And Twenty-Eight Nights). A broad spectrum of work is examined, including The Odyssey (c.625-725 BCE) by Homer, Utopia (1516) by More, Don Quixote (1605/15) by de Cervantes, Gulliver's Travels (1726) by Swift, The Lost World (1912) by Doyle, The Chronicles of Narnia (1950-1956) by Lewis, A Clockwork Orange (1962) by Burgess, The Giver (1993) by Lowry, The Hunger Games (2008) by Collins and many more. Almost 100 fictional worlds are included in this diverse collection that combines well known classics, books turned into immensely popular movies, and also less familiar works (at least to me).I have nothing bad to say about this book, and think one's enjoyment level will turn on how well read or inquisitive one is about literature from different periods and genres. It's probably not a coincidence that I enjoyed it more when reading about books I've actually read. For example, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about The Giver (which I've read) and Lowry's personal motivations in writing what became such a controversial book yet from her eyes it's simply "about a kid making sense of a complicated world." Other times, I randomly picked a couple works unknown to me to read about at a time, and sometimes I was a tad disinterested while other times I enjoyed the material. That's not a commentary on the book, but more about the fact certain genres don't interest me. Still, I appreciate that Literary Wonderlands introduced me to "new" books and gave me a flavor for what else I might want to read in the future. This is an impressive book with a lot substance.
Was really enjoying this kindle version of book until I saw the hardback version in a store. It is full of big, beautiful illustrations and maps. The kindle version of this book has ZERO illustrations. What a cheap and lazy production. I got this on sale and I’m still severely disappointed. Do not spend $16 on the kindle version. Spend five bucks more and get the hardback.
What to give my 30-year-old nephew for Christmas? I'm a technology dunce and sick of gift cards, so I gave him this book. It was a huge hit - not only with him but with the other members of the family who said they would be ordering their own copies. I want one, too!
A wonderful retrospective on fantasy lands and myths spanning 2,000 years. It revisits worlds familiar and new from classics to contemporary. A must read.
Great
Got this for my son, who loves it.
You would think a book like this would actually take you on a tour of literary wonderlands, it did not. Very disappointed:(
This is a truly beautiful book, with gorgeous color illustrations on almost every page 2-page spread, so reading it, even flipping through it, is a delight. The first thing I did was check to see which of my favorite literary worlds had been included, and I read those entries feeling great pleasure and satisfaction to see the texts I love treated with such respectful and thought-provoking attention. But discovering new-to-you authors is the biggest perk of Literary Wonderlands, with one very slight caveat. If you are someone who avoids spoilers at all costs (I am not), if your reading pleasure is diminished by knowing ahead of time some of what happens in a story, then you'll want to precede with caution. In order for them give substantial insights, quite a few of the entries contain summaries which tell in a very general way what happens in the book being featured. Since many of these books are well known classics, especially the older ones, I don't think this will be an issue for most readers. The entries were authored by an impressive list of knowledgeable and talented writers, some of them scholars or historians, and some of them creators of their own literary wonderlands, like Lev Grossman (his The Magicians series is, sadly, not included in the book). Essays are arranged in 5 chronological groups: Ancient Myth and Legend, Science and Romanticism, Golden Age of Fantasy, New World Order, and The Computer Age ( a strange title choice because most of the stories in this group have nothing to do with computers).Literary Wonderlands would be a great holiday gift book for anyone (including yourself!) who loves to read.
