Review
“I just finished reading Art Shamsky’s new book about those ‘69 Miracle Mets and their upset victory over the vaunted Baltimore Orioles. I was a sophomore in high school and this book brought back all those vivid memories of that series. A great and insightful read.” (Keith Hernandez)“Not since Halberstam’s The Teammates: Portrait of a Friendship, have I read a more heartfelt and inspiring book about what it means to be linked forever. I personally know the kindness of the author, Art Shamsky, only he could pull off this hilarious and melancholy look at getting old but remaining forever young because of their shared ‘miracle’ in 1969.” (Ron Darling)“Impossible fifty years ago — and still unforgettable half a century later.” (Bob Costas)"After the Miracle is touching and beautiful—a magical book about a magical team.” (Jonathan Eig, author of Luckiest Man, Opening Day, and Ali: A Life)"Wasn't that a time? When the last became first and anything seemed possible, in baseball and in life? After the Miracle recalls those thrilling days for now-old boys like me, and shows a new generation of fans that losing serves only to sweeten victory. Warmly and wistfully, Art Shamsky and Erik Sherman reunite the boys of summer, fifty years later." (John Thorn, Official Historian of Major League Baseball and author of Baseball in the Garden of Eden) “A highly intimate portrait of the men whose half-century ago miracle continues to enchant us. A must for anyone who witnessed their greatness, or wishes they had.” (Gary Cohen, SNY play-by-play announcer)“Teams win championships every year; the '69 Mets transcended victory. They defined an era and changed lives. Mine is one of them. Their story and their obvious bond is eternal.” (Howie Rose, broadcaster, New York Mets)“The Miracle Mets were my team growing up as a kid in Brooklyn. I love how Art gives you all the locker room banter and how the guys kidded with each other. I thought I knew all there was about the 1969 Mets but this book proves there is so much more to learn about the team that captivated the city and the country.” (John Franco)"This heartfelt, nostalgic memoir will delight baseball fans of all ages and allegiances." (Publishers Weekly)“A fond remembrance of a legendary baseball team . . . . An enjoyable tale of a storybook season.” (Kirkus Reviews)

This is not just about one of baseball's greatest pennant races. It deals with brotherhood. Shamsky writes of friendships that have endured over half a century, proving that some things are stronger than the sport that brought them together. Back when the players had nicknames that were colorful: "The Franchise," "Glider", et al. It was when people could afford to go to a ball game, and baseball was fun to watch. When the great Gil Hodges ran the Miracle Mets. It was the best of times as far as baseball was concerned, and when Shamsky gets together with his teammates, you feel as if you are there with them.
I was 11 years old when the Amazin's won the World Series. I lived outside Philly but this team captured my imagination. I was always a National League guy so the Mets fit that bill but this was something different. Had posters adorning my bedroom wall of the team and Koos and Seaver etc. This book brings everything back beautifully. So well written. The idea of how the book is laid out with a review of the season followed by the trip of a few teammates to see The Franchise is perfect. Baseball fans should appreciate it but fans of that team will enjoy and savor that season once again by reading this book.
I have been a Mets fan since 1962. The '69 Mets are my all time favorite Mets team, and Art Shamsky one of my favorite players. When this book came out, I had to purchase it, and went to a book signing. Art Shamsky and Erik Sherman were very appreciative that the fans came to buy the book. I couldn't wait to read it and read it in 2 days. I couldn't put it down. What made it so good is that it was told from Art Shamsky's personal remembrances, as well as those from the other players on that incredible team. Some of the remembrances were funny and others were poignant. I felt like I was back in 1969. Every Mets fan, especially those who were lucky enough to have watched those games in that glorious season, should buy this book.
The content is great but the audiobook is an embarrassment. The introduction by Mr. Shamsky is fantastic. He should’ve read the entire book. Unfortunately, the person the publisher hired did not know baseball. Mispronouncing ball players names is a distraction and really took away from the experience.
A FANTASTIC book about the 1969 Mets which is for ALL baseball fans, not just fans of the NY Mets. The book is about the special bond which comprises the most unlikely team to win the World Series. A true brotherhood of players who played for each other under the genius of manager Gil Hodges and led by terrific pitching and timely hitting. The book will also take you on their emotional journey to visit Hall of Famer Tom Seaver in this, the 50th anniversary of winning the World Series.
This book is very compelling. I enjoyed hearing so many personal stories.
It might have been a good idea for someone to ensure the names were pronounced correctly before it was finalized for audio.
As a Mets fan, this book was a great read! The 1969 Mets are legendary and this book paid proper respect to their legacy!
